Suzanne Tabert is a bio-regional herbalist, wildcrafter, founder and director of herbal education at the Cedar Mountain Herb School, teaching from a lifetime of personal and academic studies of plants and their habitats. She is a member of the American Herbalists Guild, the American Herb Association, Partner in Education at United Plant Savers, and is practicum supervisor and adjunct faculty at Bastyr University. She has been teaching herbal medicine for 30 years, with plans to continue throughout her lifetime.
My passion for herbs started when I was a little girl. My Aunt Mary, who passed away in 2006 at 99 years old, shared with me her quiet passion for plants. She had a sunroom in her home in Pennsylvania which housed dozens of beautiful plants which she taught me to care for. Aunt Mary taught me about her garden plants. She told me how to cook with herbs. She sent me home with seeds and cuttings. She showed me her money plant and taught me to plant it near the door to bring the money to the home, which is an old Slovak tradition. I always put parsley and garlic in my chicken soup because of Aunt Mary. She and my grandmother used to tell me stories about how my Great Grandma used herbs and common sense to keep them and their brothers healthy. I have Aunt Mary’s spearmint, which travels with me whenever I move to a new home. The root stock is over 80 years old. My apprentices and friends take home pieces of the roots to grow her spearmint in their own gardens. This is how I keep my auntie’s memory alive and rippling out across the country.
I was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Illinois with dirt so black it seemed that plants burst forth from seed the second they were tossed on the ground. My dad had a huge vegetable garden and when I was old enough, he would carve out a tiny plot for me each spring. I can almost see him pick a ripe tomato right off the vine, sprinkle salt on it and eat it without ever leaving the garden. I learned so much from my Dad. He canned pickles from cucumbers from his garden and made us kids eat kohlrabi raw which was quite a feat, I must say. I don’t remember everything I grew in that little garden of mine, but I do remember one year I planted seeds that grew into tiny seedless watermelons. I have never gotten over the joy of growing and eating vegetables I planted myself.
My dad remembered his grandma sending him out to pick dandelion leaves every spring. She sauteed them up with onions and garlic in bacon fat. What a treat! She understood that food is medicine. The nutrients in dandelion leaves are plentiful, and the acidic nature of the bacon fat helped to aid the calcium and iron to be better assimilated by her family’s body cells. She didn’t know the science, but she knew her plants.
When people ask who you are and you say ‘I’m an accountant,’ that is what you do, not who you are. For me, my work and who I am are the same. Not many people can say that. I am very truly blessed. Working with plants is my life and my day job. I have had and continue to have so much fulfillment in many different ways being with the plants and my students. My favorite part of my “job” is taking students to my favorite places and introducing them to the plants and their habits. Everywhere from deep in the woods, to the mountain tops and over the passes, to the ocean….plants are here, vital and waiting to be introduced. They have so much to offer and are so willing to teach, heal and nourish.
I have learned from a variety of people along the way, have read hundreds of herbal guide books, but it is really the plants who have taught me. I work with them every day, literally every day, harvesting wild herbs in a multitude of habitats, formulating herbal remedies, working with and teaching my amazing tribe of apprentices and day students, drinking herbal teas, cooking with herbs and using my herbals to keep my family, students, and friends healthy and nourished.
My science geek side has pushed me to learn as much as I can about the human body, its anatomy and physiology. My fascination with how the plants react on cells, molecules, organs, and body systems keeps me in the academic world as well as the forest.

As a child I was absolutely enchanted by plants, I delighted in making potions with them in the fields behind our house, growing and eating them straight from our garden, and spending time soaking up their beauty and peace in the majestic Wasatch and Uintah mountains where I grew up.
From an early age I felt a deep sense of kinship with plants and explored them in a holistic and authentic way that only a child can: with all my senses and an open heart. In this way I began to learn about the language of plants and began to develop an understanding of a deep and ancient relationship with them.
As a young adult, I began my formal herbal training in 1992 while living in Eugene, Oregon. It was here that I discovered the power and efficacy of plant medicine and a passion for western and bioregional herbalism which only grew as I immersed myself in the diversity of plants growing in the mountains, beaches, deserts, and lush valleys of the breathtaking Pacific Northwest. I give thanks every day for this beautiful place.
I continued to learn about plants through self-study over the years as I pursued a degree and career in Early Childhood Education. Eventually, though, I returned to my love story with herbalism and have been embracing that path for the last 12 years, taking every course I can from amazing teachers and elders in the herbalist community, attending herbal conferences and workshops, engaging in peer learning, and of course, apprenticing with Suzanne at the Cedar Mountain herb School – the most important and live-changing part of my education! I love her so much and feel beyond blessed to work with her!
It is a wonderful feeling to be able to wildcraft and grow my own herbs in order to share supportive botanical creations with family and friends. It makes my heart swell when my son asks me if I can send him more willow bark tincture, or cottonwood bud salve, or elderberry elixir-because it’s a testament to how well herbs work! I want to share this knowledge with students so they can feel empowered to make the best, most effective herbal medicine for themselves and others.
I believe that we need only look around us to find the plants that will nurture, heal and sustain us mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. These are the plants we are in community with. Getting to know these plants intimately where they grow is an important part of remembering our connection to the earth and developing a sense of place.
As a teacher, my goals are to help others rediscover their shared birthright with plant allies and how to incorporate them in nature-based self- and family care. As each body and spirit is unique and sacred, so is each person’s path. My hope is to help students feel inspired to embrace their own wisdom of plants and listen to what they can teach.
The plant path is infinite; there is always something new to explore. I continue to learn and grow from the beautiful relationships I have with my herb friends, both plant and human…I look forward to having you as a new herb friend too!

Sita Tocco is a certified Ananda Meditation Teacher and a certified Ananda Yoga Teacher (RYT-500). She holds a Master’s in Teaching (MIT) degree from Seattle University. Sita lives a hop-skip-and-a-joyful-jump from Ananda Farm Camano Island, a natural farm, aspiring homestead, and yoga ashram. Sita teaches a weekly drop-in Ananda Yoga class, an Ananda Yoga for Beginners Series, Learn to Meditate classes, a weekly online guided meditation, and assists with the Meditation Teacher Training program and Raja Yoga Intensive at Ananda Washington. She also teaches corporate yoga and meditation classes.
Sita says, “I took my first yoga class in 1997 while I was 7 months pregnant with my first child. Ah, such relief for my suddenly not-so-familiar and rapidly changing body. A miracle was happening, yes, but still an adjustment. Yoga brought so much relief to my body! (Not surprisingly, perhaps, this child went on to take yoga teacher training at the age of 19!)
I practiced a few different types of yoga, but everything clicked when I discovered Ananda Yoga in 2014. While I still was using my body very deeply to help it relax and for my mind to calm, I was deeply moved with the way Ananda Yoga incorporates breath work, pranayama, affirmations, and meditative practices. I took Ananda Yoga Teacher Training in 2015 and not only have been enjoying a deepening of my own practice but also the joy of sharing this practice with others.
As yoga was first conceived to help the body and mind becomes still for meditation, I noticed how much my daily yoga practice improved because of my yoga practice. I took Ananda Meditation Teacher Training in 2018 and while my practice grows richer, my heart grows fuller sharing meditation with so many.
Ananda means “divine bliss” in Sanskrit. Ananda is also the name of the Community in which I live. We are inspired by the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic, “Autobiography of a Yogi.” Swami Kriyananda, who lived with Yogananda the last few years of Yogananda’s life started the work of Ananda as a Community in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains of California in 1968. It’s been a thriving, living work since then!
Living so close to Ananda Farm Camano Island, I’ve been blessed to be so close to nature – to the multi-hued flowers, an enchanting variety herbs and vegetables, the sounds of many bees and hummingbirds, the flit of butterflies and many dragonflies, to the stillness that nature so easily offers. With my hands in the soil and with an uplifted heart, many days have been spent harvesting herbs, creating remedies in the fields and Herb Shop with the farm team. It was in this haven on the farm that I first met Suzanne, which has only increased my love and understanding of beloved herbs.”
