“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) has a long history of being used in traditional herbal remedies that are safe, tried and true. Which is why it is used so extensively even today!
Its fuzzy leaves are full of healing, soothing mucilage that is beneficial to the respiratory tract. Mullein is a gentle, yet powerful expectorant, moistening stuck mucus to help coughs be more productive, and can also quiet a spasmodic cough. It is an excellent plant to have on hand for dry, hot summers and smoky skies.
With mullein’s special affinity for the lungs, it is also an herb that helps us to process grief, open our center and let the joy back in. Noting its tall straight spine, mullein flower remedy aids in helping us to stand up for ourselves. We can all use some of that at times, yes?
The bright yellow flowers contain resins and terpenes that make a wonderful oil for earaches and a balm for skin trauma. Iridoid glycosides such as aucubin (part of the plant’s defense system) are anti-inflammatory, soothe nerve pain and promote healing in damaged nerves. Mullein can be an ally for musculoskeletal complaints, skin and connective tissue disorders – note its tall straight spine – but that’s not all! Come learn about its many herbal actions!
As a side note, you may have heard mullein called “nature’s toilet paper” because the leaves are so soft and fuzzy…we will find out why it’s REALLY not a good idea to try this!
In this full day intensive, we will learn where mullein grows, how to properly identify and harvest it according to its growth cycle. We will learn all the different ways that mullein can be used. And cover a variety of preparations, including which preparations work best for different situations, and what other herbs can be combined with mullein to create the most effective remedies!
This is a very hands-on class and you will learn to make and take home several different of remedies. Your choices will include and elixir, oxymel, herbal vinegar, tincture, oil and tea! Come discover the many, many virtues of mullein, a fantastic weed friend to know and love!
