Be prepared for the colder months ahead by learning about and making remedies from one of the most prolific, health-giving trees in the Pacific Northwest! The citrusy-pine redolent needles and bark of the Douglas Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, make good medicine! Conifers have a special affinity for the respiratory system, opening up the lungs and sinuses, easing the breath, and allowing for more efficiently oxygenated cells throughout the body, promoting healthy vitality! This generous tree even supports immune system function and promotes a relaxed state of calm energy! Our Douglas-fir tree is an important herbal ally that gladdens the heart and keeps us healthy through the darker winter days ahead!

In this class you are in for a seasonal treat! Douglas-fir can be crafted into a delicious elixir or oxymel, honey or tincture, transformed into syrups, refreshing beverages, incorporated into both sweet and savory recipes, added to baths, soothing steams and heavenly infused oils for salves, chest rubs and lotions. The freshly sweet, woodsy, citrusy-pine scent of the Douglas-firs’ needles and bark make a variety of effective remedies…it is an herbal apothecary necessity!
Evergreen trees have a special affinity for the respiratory system! Douglas-fir can keep us breathing easy during the winter months, opening up the lungs and sinuses, allowing for more efficiently oxygenated cells throughout the body. The needles and bark are astringent and antimicrobial, full of vitamins, polyphenols, complex volatile oils, and aromatic resins that strengthen, support, and invigorate our immune system. Douglas-fir works with our nervous systems to evoke states of both relaxation and calm energy-just what we need going into the holidays and the the Winter season of rest. It is an important herbal ally for winter days ahead!
In this class you will experience the healing magic of being in the forest while you sip Douglas-fir chai and learn ALL about this ecologically important tree, its unique identifiers, how to responsibly wildcraft, sustainable harvesting techniques, and MORE!
Which is the better time to harvest: Spring or Fall? It all depends on the medicines you want to make! In this class you will learn how the phytochemical constituents of the Douglas-fir change depending on the season. This understanding helps us make the most effective remedies!
You will have the option to make 2 remedies and your choices are: a Doug-fir honey, tincture, elixir, oxymel or vinegar (your choice), along with recipes and detailed instructions for even more remedies! By the way, a Douglas-fir infused honey makes a most delightful and appreciated gift!
What you’ll need:
Depending on what you think you will want to make, please bring a pint each of 151 proof vodka or rum or 190-proof Everclear, a pint of raw local honey, and/or a pint of raw apple cider vinegar.

- 2 clean half pint jars with lids (plastic lids if making an oxymel (part vinegar, part honey)
- Scissors or a cutting board and knife
- Masking tape or labels
- Camp chair or blanket to sit on
- Notebook and pen
- Lunch, water, snacks, something warm to drink
- A mug for sampling Douglas-fir chai!
Come prepared with a full tank of gas, rain gear and boots, should they be needed!
