Whether you’re new to herbalism or are more experienced and want to add to your self-reliant herbal tool belt, you’ll gain the skills needed to feel confident knowing when to pick plants at their strongest medicinal and nutritional value and how to process them into highly effective herbal remedies.
We are all about medicinal oils and how to turn them into skin healing and soothing creams, salves, lotion bars and lip balms!
While we will spend some of the class in the Cedar Mountain Herb School’s garden identifying the plants we’ll use, much of our time will be spent in the cozy kitchen, practicing our alchemy.
Resins, gums, mucilage, essential oils, some alkaloids, and a few other constituents are soluble in fats and oils. Suzanne will unpack several ways to make medicinal oils and decant them in the best way to prevent mold and to ensure a longer shelf life without chemicals. We’ll discuss the plethora of the different oils to choose from and which ones will work best for the skin, with a nod to allergens.
We’ll use cottonwood bud oil, comfrey oil and reishi mushroom oil (YES!) to make a variety of salves, lotions bars, skin cream and lip balm. This is one workshop you don’t want to miss!
Students will take home samples of each herbal ware made during the workshop. Copies of Suzanne’s skin care book Wild and Beautiful will be available for purchase to follow along, if so desired.
