Autumn is the season to prepare our home apothecaries with natural herbal remedies that prevent and alleviate common illnesses and keep us healthy during the winter months. In this Autumn Wellness Series class, you will be introduced to our native cherry trees and learn how to harvest and prepare the bark for crafting simple and effective remedies!
The plants and trees found in your ecosystem are your herbal allies. In the PNW, the bark from our native and naturalized Prunus species, aka cherry trees, is a wonderfully effective muscle relaxant and antispasmodic with sedative and expectorant properties, and that is just the start. You may primarily know cherry bark as a supportive remedy for respiratory conditions, or for quieting unproductive spasmodic coughs… but did you know we can also work with cherry bark to address a wide variety of ailments from gastrointestinal complaints to histamine induced inflammation? Yes we can!
In this class you will learn to identify, harvest, and properly prepare the bark of the cherry tree to make infusions, tincture, elixirs and syrups.
We will discuss different types of cough and the specifics of when and why you might consider cherry bark, and how to work with it knowledgeably, including how to assess when a different approach may be more appropriate for supporting an individual respiratory condition. You will also learn what herbs combine well with cherry bark for different results.
You will take home a 2-oz amber glass bottle (provided) of the fresh cherry bark cough syrup we will make using native cherry bark, local artesian water, honey and home-grown herbs.
You will also make and take home either a cherry bark tincture (made with alcohol) or elixir (made with honey and alcohol). If you, or someone you want to share your remedies with, is abstaining from alcohol, you might instead choose to make and infused honey, glycerite or an oxymel (vinegar and honey).
Enjoy the beauty of the fall season! This class takes place in a lovely outdoor location where you will be treated to hot apple cider and wonderful company!
