Develop and add to your Herbal Tool Belt with First Aid knowledge, skills and hand-crafted apothecary staples with plants that are available in each season. This course is taught by an herbalist and wildcrafter trained in Advanced First Aid.

You will learn basic first aid responses, protocols and preparations that address a wide variety of emergency topics and situations. And you will develop your own Materia medica and herbal first aid kit!

We will cover herbs and protocols for wound care including minor burns, scrapes, cuts, bruises and sprains, preventing and managing infection, stopping bleeding, addressing mild allergic reactions, contact dermatitis/rash, gastrointestinal emergencies, pain, heat and cold emergencies, insect stings, animal bites and even psychological first aid.

** The summer course will also include herbs appropriate for addressing wildfire season mental and respiratory health. This course builds on the Spring session but can be taken as a stand-along course. Beginners welcomed and encouraged!

Develop the knowledge and confidence to keep calm in emergency situations!

In these classes, learning takes place through instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. You will learn field ID and preparations, what plant parts to use and when, how to utilize them in emergency situations for the most effective results and how to create effective remedies to add to your herbal first aid kit. Plant ID, constituents and medicine making instruction is also provided.

Each day we will be at a different location learning about the plants that are in season and especially useful in first aid situations including emergent trailside applications and remedies with freshly picked plants, as well as remedies that you make in advance preparation and add to your herbal first aid kit that grows with the seasons!

Herbal actions and categories of herbs that may be covered: disinfectants and antimicrobials, astringent/drawing herbs, analgesics and anodyne herbs, nervines, and more!

Medicinal preparations that may be covered include: poultices, liniments, hydrotherapy, fomentations, tinctures, glacial mineral clays, salts, succi, topical honeys, salves, infusions/decoctions, aromatherapy remedies, and more.

Plants that may be covered in the Summer Session include: Fireweed, Lavender, Self-Heal, Rose, Gumweed, Goldenrod, St John’s Wort, Mullein, Coltsfoot, Comfrey, Calendula, Mints, Cleavers, Plantain, Yarrow, and more!

Leaf, Bud, Shoots, Roots, Resins, Bark, Flower, Seed, Fruits/Berries, each has its own season and purpose in herbal first aid! Not only do we go beyond the “this herb is good for that” mentality, we recognize that it is simply not enough to know that willow is “good for” pain, or that Herb Robert can stop bleeding. That knowledge is not useful to you unless you also know how to find the herb, prepare and administer these herbs and in what context to use them and with who!

Each class session will be at a different location. Details, location and carpool arrangements will be provided before each class. For reference, during each session, we may travel to places near Seattle and to areas farther out such as Cle Elum, Camano/Whidbey Islands, Mt Rainier Area, Tacoma, Snoqualmie/North Bend or the Carnation Area.

Carpool options may be arranged if needed. Please email Heather to inquire.
